Pensacola Ear Surgery or Otoplasty

Surgery of the ear, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, is a procedure that helps reduce the size and protrusion of the ears.  Many patients who are candidates for otoplasty are children.  Ears that "stick out" are often the source of teasing and ridicule, so correcting this prior to any devastating effect on the psyche is preferred.  However, we often see adults who tolerated ridicule throughout their childhood and have now decided to have their ears corrected.

Reasons for Considering Ear Surgery in Pensacola

  • Bring proportion to the face if the ears “stick out” too much
  • Reduce and reshape long or offset earlobes

Otoplasty Procedure by Pensacola Plastic Surgeon

Ear surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia depending upon the age of the patient.  You will be able to go home on the day of surgery.  The standard otoplasty procedure performed by Dr. Shaddix brings the ears closer to the head.  Otoplasty begins with an incision hidden in the crease behind the ear.  This incision allows the cartilage located behind the ears to be reshaped, and, in some cases, partially removed to reposition the ears close to the scalp. Specialized sutures are used to create a lifelong result.

Recovery after Ear Surgery in Pensacola

After the surgery is completed, a special dressing will be wrapped around the head. This method secures the ear in place and assists with the healing process.  The bandages are usually removed within a week and replaced with smaller dressings. Post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. The discomfort after otoplasty is typically well controlled with the medication prescribed by Dr. Shaddix.  You should keep your head elevated to decrease the swelling in the first few days.  As with all surgery at Shaddix Plastic Surgery, you will given detailed before and after surgery instructions, and Dr. Shaddix will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.
