What is Rhinoplasty?

The nose is the central point of the face, so when it is not in harmony with the rest of the facial features, it stands out. Nasal surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or nose job, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can reshape and sculpt the nasal tissues to improve the size, projection, angle, and shape of the nose. Any number of nasal deformities can be addressed with a rhinoplasty procedure. These include a large nose, a bulky or boxy nasal tip, or a nasal bridge with a hump.

Rhinoplasty continues to be one of the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. When performed by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Shaddix, you can achieve transformative, long-lasting results with rhinoplasty.

Patient Results

Your Customized Rhinoplasty

Your first step is a consultation with Dr. Shaddix where he will determine whether you are a good rhinoplasty patient and how you can benefit from nose surgery. You should be in good health and able to undergo surgery, as well as take some time off work or school to recover. Dr. Shaddix will discuss the details of your medical history and perform a thorough examination of your nose and areas like the nasal bridge and nasal tip. He will then go over possible techniques for your potential nose surgery.

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed in one of two ways. Both techniques are available at Shaddix Plastic Surgery, and your particular situation will help determine which is best for achieving your aesthetic goals during your surgical procedure. Dr. Shaddix will spend considerable time during your consultation discussing the best nose surgery technique for your facial features, cosmetic goals, and more.

Open Rhinoplasty

The open approach to rhinoplasty is where a small incision is placed at the base of the nose as well as inside the nasal structure. This approach allows for more significant reshaping of the cartilage (in the nasal bridge or nasal tip) and nasal bones as well as better visibility of the underlying nasal structure. Although there is the chance of visible scarring across the base of the nose, it is often the best option for more substantial nose reshaping. It may also be used to help correct a deviated nasal septum as well as graft bone and cartilage to enhance the nose.

Closed Rhinoplasty

The other option for rhinoplasty is the endonasal (or closed) procedure, using incisions made entirely inside the nose to avoid visible scarring. This technique comes with the benefit of no visible incisions and a slightly reduced downtime, but it can be difficult to achieve certain changes to the nasal structure using this rhinoplasty procedure.

The Procedure

A rhinoplasty procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and you will be able to return home the same day. During the rhinoplasty procedure, small incisions are made within the nose and sometimes across the base or columella. These incisions allow exposure of the underlying nasal support structures made of bone and cartilage. Each portion of the bone and cartilage can be expertly manipulated by Dr. Shaddix to reshape the nose, including manipulating the nasal septum or correcting a broken nose in the case of a functional rhinoplasty. Many times, a segment of the septal cartilage will be used to make grafts that help to further refine the nasal shape in the nasal bridge or nasal tip.

The best decision I ever made, Dr. Shaddix is amazing, I was so nervous, and waited so long, but Dr. Shaddix and Shelly made me feel comfortable, confident, and like family. I am so proud of how I look now, I wish I would have done it sooner”

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Following your rhinoplasty procedure, you should plan on a week of rest and time off work. During this week, you will have a splint placed on the outside of your nose. Dr. Shaddix, in almost all cases, is able to avoid placing nasal splints internally, as they can be very bothersome to patients. The external splint will be removed one week after surgery. All sutures are absorbable so there will be no need for their removal. You should avoid wearing eyeglass during your recovery and opt for contacts instead. The discomfort after rhinoplasty can be minimized with medication prescribed by Dr. Shaddix.

Swelling after a rhinoplasty procedure can be significant in the first few days and linger for several months. You should keep your head elevated to decrease the swelling in the first few days. Though much of the swelling will resolve within a month or two, it may take a full year to reach your final results. When your rhinoplasty recovery is complete, you will see significant improvement in your facial features and their relation to your new nose. You will enjoy a more balanced and harmonious facial profile as well as improved function.

As with all cosmetic surgery at Shaddix Plastic Surgery, you will be given detailed before-and-after surgery instructions, and Dr. Shaddix will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way. Dr. Shaddix is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon and one of the leading rhinoplasty and facial plastic surgery experts in the Pensacola area.
