What is a Facelift?

A facelift, otherwise known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that provides significant facial rejuvenation. The procedure can turn back the clock to help you achieve a much younger appearance, removing sagging skin and tightening the facial tissue to smooth out wrinkles and folds. A facelift can also address signs of aging in the neck and under the chin, especially when combined with a neck lift procedure. When performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr. Shaddix, the results are still natural-looking, so you’ll still look like you, but more refreshed.

Your Customized Facelift

A facelift can be customized based on where you’re at in the aging process. If you feel younger than you appear, you may consider facelift surgery at Shaddix Plastic Surgery. Dr. Shaddix’s highly specialized surgical techniques address both the skin and the underlying facial tissues and muscles to produce dramatic yet natural-looking results that are customized to meet your goals. Dr. Shaddix will examine your signs of aging to determine the facelift or other facial rejuvenation techniques that are right for you. The facelift is sometimes combined with another procedure like a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery for full facial rejuvenation.

Sometimes, a patient may be a candidate for a mini facelift where the incisions are limited and less facial tissue is repositioned. This technique is appropriate for those with mild signs of aging that do not require a full facelift. This technique also leads to an easier recovery period.

The Procedure

Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation for your comfort. Small incisions are placed around the ear and within the hairline where they can be easily concealed. The facial skin is lifted off of the underlying tissues, and these tissues are then repositioned to create a more youthful appearance. Sutures are then used to keep the tissue in place and the skin is redraped to cover your newly contoured face and neck.

Recovery After Facelift

Facelift Procedure

After a facelift, some patients may go home the same day, while others stay in the hospital for one night to recover under supervision. Following your procedure, Dr. Shaddix will wrap your face with a special bandage to minimize swelling and protect your incision sites. Patients should plan for at least a week off work to rest and recover at home. Recovery can vary based on how your body heals and whether you received a full or mini facelift.

It is important to keep your head elevated during this time to help minimize swelling and bruising. Very small drains may be placed at the time of surgery to remove excess fluids and will be removed on the day after surgery, while sutures are typically removed one week later. There is some mild discomfort after a facelift that is easily managed with the medication prescribed to you by Dr. Shaddix. As with all facial rejuvenation surgery at Shaddix Plastic Surgery, you will be given detailed before-and-after surgery instructions. Dr. Shaddix will be available to answer questions and guide you along the way.
