Four Ways to Customize Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures that Dr. Shaddix offers. With a high number of patients choosing breast augmentation, it’s no surprise that there are several ways that the procedure can be individualized to meet a patient’s specific needs. Four major factors can vary to suit the patient’s concerns and aesthetic goals.
Implant size
Size tends to be the patient’s first concern when choosing breast augmentation. During your consultation, we allow patients to try on implants in a variety of sizes to see which feel and look best.
Remember that bigger is not always better — implants that are too large can cause complications after surgery and be unflattering to your body shape. Dr. Shaddix will help you choose the implant size that is safest for you and best meets your goals.
Implant placement
There are two options to choose from when it comes to your breast implant placement: subglandular (in front of the muscle) or submuscular (behind the chest muscle.) Dr. Shaddix will discuss these options with you before surgery, but there are some basic factors in choosing.
Subglandular placement makes for a generally less complicated surgery. It also tends to be slightly less natural-looking, as the implant is closer to the skin and more visible overall.
Submuscular placement may result in longer healing time, but the implant is overall less visible and mammograms are easier.
Implant type
Patients of Dr. Shaddix can choose between two types of implants: saline or silicone. Both of these implant types are constructed using a similar outer shell.
Saline implants are filled with saltwater. Some patients choose saline because if the implant leaks, it will collapse and the saltwater will be naturally and safely absorbed by the body.
Silicone breast implants typically feel more like natural breast tissue than saline implants. In the case of a leak, the silicone will either remain in the shell or escape into the body, but the implant will not collapse. Patients may need to follow up with Dr. Shaddix regularly following surgery to ensure the implant is functioning properly.
Incision location
Breast augmentations can be performed through incisions under the breast, around the areola, or in the underarm. All three of these options result in minimal scarring, and Dr. Shaddix can best determine which option is right for you based on your anatomy and the other factors of your surgery.
The best way to choose between all of these options is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shaddix. Call our Pensacola office at (850) 359-3863 or request an appointment online to get started.
