Rhinoplasty: The Do’s & Don’ts

plastic surgery rhinoplasty

When considering cosmetic surgery, it is important to make sure that you are fully prepared for the procedure. Part of the preparation process is knowing what to do and what to avoid before, during, and after the surgery in order to get the best results with the easiest recovery. Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as nose surgery, is one of the most complex cosmetic procedures. To get the most out of it, it is important to choose a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon, know what’s necessary for preparation, and be committed to the recovery process.

Dr. Shaddix is a double board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Pensacola, Florida. He has world-class training, which allows him to help patients get their ideal noses. During your consultation appointment, Dr. Shaddix will go over everything you need to know for your rhinoplasty surgery.

How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Shaddix will provide a list of steps to prep for your rhinoplasty procedure. It is important to follow his directions closely to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Do:

  1. Stop smoking at least one month prior to your surgery
  2. Stop taking aspirin, Advil, and other medications like this at least two weeks prior to your surgery
  3. Take ample time away from work
  4. Prepare your house for your recovery (i.e. find child/pet care, set up a healing space, purchase necessary products and medications)

Don’t:

  1. Take medication that thins the blood
  2. Spend long hours in the sun, as this could make your skin sensitive
  3. Book the surgery a few weeks before a big event
  4. Eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery

How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty Recovery?

The initial recovery from rhinoplasty can take anywhere between 4-8 weeks. However, over the course of the year following your nose surgery, your nose will continue to heal and improve. It is important to carefully follow the instructions given by Dr. Shaddix so that healing goes as smoothly as possible.

Do’s for Recovery

  1. Keep your head elevated, using at least 2 pillows to help reduce swelling
  2. Give yourself a cushion of time away from work to heal, generally 2-3 weeks
  3. Take small walks and wiggle your toes to keep blood circulating
  4. Get plenty of rest

Don’ts for Recovery

  1. Don’t put anything in or on your nose
  2. Lift heavy things
  3. Participate in strenuous activity or contact sports
