What Is a Tummy Tuck? A Plastic Surgery Overview

A tummy tuck is one of the most commonly performed body contouring procedures in plastic surgery. It is designed to remove excess abdominal skin, tighten separated or weakened muscles, and create a smoother, more contoured midsection. The procedure can address changes that occur after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or simply the natural aging process.

Dr. Kyle Shaddix, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, performs abdominoplasty using techniques refined through his training at the Mayo Clinic and his plastic surgery fellowship at Methodist Hospital in Houston. His approach prioritizes natural-looking results and thorough patient education so that you feel informed and confident every step of the way.

Depending on your anatomy and goals, Dr. Shaddix may recommend a full abdominoplasty, a mini tummy tuck, or a combination approach. Each plan is tailored to the individual, and results will vary based on your unique anatomy, health history, and lifestyle. Individual results may vary.

Candidacy and Benefits of Abdominoplasty in Gulf Breeze

You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are in good general health, at or near a stable weight, a non-smoker or willing to quit prior to surgery, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. This procedure is not a substitute for weight loss, but it can help refine and restore abdominal contour after major body changes.

Patients throughout Gulf Breeze and the greater Pensacola area often seek abdominoplasty for the following reasons:

  • Persistent loose or sagging abdominal skin following pregnancy or weight loss
  • Diastasis recti, or separation of the abdominal muscles, that affects core function and appearance
  • A protruding lower abdomen that does not respond to targeted exercise
  • Desire for a more defined waistline and improved body proportions
  • Preparing for or following a mommy makeover or body contouring plan

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, a tummy tuck may improve your abdominal profile and help you feel more at ease in clothing or activewear. As with any surgical procedure, risks exist and will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

What to Expect From Your Procedure and Recovery

Your experience at Shaddix Plastic Surgery begins with a thorough, one-on-one consultation. Dr. Shaddix will review your medical history, evaluate your areas of concern, discuss realistic outcomes, and outline a surgical plan tailored specifically to you. Patient education is a cornerstone of care at our practice, and no question is too small.

The procedure itself is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately two to four hours depending on the scope of work. Most patients return home the same day or the following day. During recovery, you will wear a compression garment to support healing and help manage swelling in the treated areas.

Most patients take one to two weeks away from work and daily activities, though individual recovery varies. Light walking is generally encouraged early in recovery to support circulation. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are typically restricted for four to six weeks. Swelling and mild discomfort are common in the initial weeks and gradually improve. Final results typically become more apparent over several months as swelling resolves and the tissue settles.

Have more questions? Contact our team online or call (850) 359-3863 to speak with a member of our staff.

What does a tummy tuck in Gulf Breeze, FL typically cost?

The cost of abdominoplasty varies based on the scope of your procedure, anesthesia, facility fees, and other individual factors. A detailed quote is provided after your consultation with Dr. Shaddix. Financing options may be available to help make care more accessible.

How is a tummy tuck different from liposuction?

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, while liposuction addresses localized fat deposits. Some patients benefit from a combination of both procedures. Dr. Shaddix will help you determine which approach best aligns with your anatomy and goals during your consultation.

Will a tummy tuck leave a visible scar?

A tummy tuck does involve incisions, and some degree of scarring is expected. Dr. Shaddix places incisions thoughtfully to keep them as discreet as possible, typically below the bikini line. Scars typically fade over time, though individual healing varies.

Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck if I plan to have more children?

If you are planning future pregnancies, it is generally recommended to postpone your procedure until your family is complete. Pregnancy following a tummy tuck can affect your results. Dr. Shaddix will discuss timing considerations during your personal consultation.

How long do tummy tuck results last?

Results can be long-lasting when maintained through a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Significant weight fluctuations or future pregnancies may affect your outcome. Individual results may vary, and Dr. Shaddix will set realistic expectations during your visit.

Is the procedure performed at a hospital or surgical facility?

Dr. Shaddix performs procedures at an accredited surgical facility to ensure patient safety and quality of care. Your care team will provide you with all relevant details about your surgical setting ahead of your procedure date.

What can I do to prepare for my tummy tuck surgery?

Preparation typically includes stopping smoking well in advance, avoiding certain medications, arranging for post-operative support at home, and following any pre-surgical instructions provided by Dr. Shaddix’s team. A full pre-operative checklist will be provided after you schedule your procedure.

Does a tummy tuck help with diastasis recti?

Yes, muscle repair is often a component of a full abdominoplasty and may help address diastasis recti, or the separation of the abdominal muscles. Dr. Shaddix will assess your muscle integrity during your consultation and discuss whether repair is appropriate for your situation.

Can I combine a tummy tuck with other plastic surgery procedures?

Many patients choose to combine abdominoplasty with complementary procedures such as breast surgery or liposuction as part of a broader body contouring plan. Combining procedures is evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure your safety and optimize your recovery experience.
